My podcast series is a series that I am actually
going to pursue in my role as a Nuclear Instructor. I’ve named it New in
Nuclear and essentially it will keep my students up to date with what is going
on in the nuclear industry. The industry as a whole faces some incredible
challenges in the coming years. Our plants and our workforce are aging. The
design changes resulting from the Fukushima accident are difficult to implement
and expensive, and the growing supply of economical natural gas is making our
power expensive in comparison.
All this being said, however, I’m confident that
there’s a role for our industry in the overall national energy strategy. We do
not emit any greenhouse gasses and for all their expense to construct, nuclear
power is the ideal candidate to carry the nation’s base load.
The format for the podcast will be essentially seven
to eight minutes a week with three stories from the news in each podcast. This
will give the workers at Millstone something short to listen to which will keep
them engaged and thus give them a stake in the industry as a whole.
My podcast addresses the standard in that I used a
number of different technologies in its creation. I used the Music Maker
program to create the music and sounds used in the podcast. I used a text to
speech program for the “lyrics” Lastly, I used the Audacity program to both
edit and mix the broadcast together; eliminating any errors that were made
during the podcast recording.
